I?ve been reading a lot about trim motor issues. None of them seem to fit my new problem. I?ve got a 1976 Cobalt with an OMC 235 with Selectrim. I had just finished tuning her up and replacing the points with a Pretronix kit, coil, plugs, etc when I attempted to raise the tilt (was hoping to put her in the water tomorrow). I heard the motor free spin, yet no love. I removed the clutch housing and inspected everything, even had my wife bump the tilt while looking. The worm gear didn?t even attempt to budge. In order to finish for the night, I followed the advice of many difference threads, removing the three bolts on the curved rack gear so that I could tilt the outdrive. While the curved rack gear was removed, thus no torque applied, I bumped the tilt once again. The motor spins like a champ, though nothing else happens. Let me guess, I need a new part that is NLA. Any solutions? BTW, I?m a do-it-yourself kind of guy, but new to this OMC. I?d appreciate detailed input on how best to conduct the work. Thanks!

Sounds like the coupling behind the mtr broke or else the roll pin that drives the worm gear.

So, how do I reach the motor to remove it?

It's a bi*%# depending on the boat. Some times you have to take some boat parts off to get at it. Been there and done it. It's right inline with the worm gear.

Yeah, it's a real rib killer to get back to mine. The tilt motor is mounted to the intermediate housing inside the transom. There should be two bolts that run all the way through the tilt motor connecting it to the intermediate housing. Once you loosen them, the whole assembly should come off ... be careful though, those same two bolts hold the motor assembly together so it'll be able to fall apart if you're not gentle with it.

Also, watch the hammer coupler when you pull the motor off. It might try to jump down into your bilge.
