Tilt Tube on wrong side?

Hi,

An engine I am considering purchasing is on a boat that has stick steering and is therefore on the port side of the boat. If I buy this engine will I be able to move the tilt tube so that it is on the starboard side and work with my boat? Is this something that is easy or am I asking for trouble?

Thanks,

Shane

It should be reversible. I have never seen a motor that must be hooked up to stick steering. You may need to buy some parts to make it work. Best to double and triple check first. Good Luck.

No big deal. You are just flipping that tilt tube over.Do'nt force anything, and certainly do'nt start beating on things.Move things around and they will line up.

Re: Tilt Tube on wrong side?

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I'm not going to be able to mess with it much unless I buy the motor. Should I buy the motor then worry about it, or look elsewhere?

I don't have any idea of what is involved in reversing this. Has anyone had any experience with taking this apart or how it would disassemble?

Thanks again,

Shane

whoa-whoa-whoa...the tilt tube is threaded on both ends and therefore can be used with either port OR starboard steering set-ups

Hi ZZZZZ,

So after I unhook the steering cable (that goes to the stick steering), I should just be able to unscrew the tilt tube and re-install it on the other side? Is that what you are saying?

Thanks,

Shane

Turtle

He's saying if it's threaded on both ends, you don't have to do anything but hook up your steering to the starboard side. Does it also have a threaded end on the starboard side?

(EDIT) Looking back on your post, if it's the 1975 70 HP Evinrude you are referring to, it would certainly have threaded ends on both sides.

Re: Tilt Tube on wrong side?

the manufacturers put a protective plastic nut over the threaded end not being used.if it is on the side you want to use, move it to the end you're not using...don't do anything to the tube...just screw in your steering cable

Re: Tilt Tube on wrong side?

Thanks for all the information.

I'll have to go back over there and take another look at the engine. I got the guy to finally come off the price $200. I've been working on him for a few weeks. When I went back yesterday to look at the engine and get the model #, he informed me that the price he quoted me did not include the controls and cables. That didn't make me very happy, as that just means more money I will be out for that if I buy this engine.

Thanks again

Shane

Most of them are different from one side to the other. They might have different size threads or they might have just a threaded shoulder on the port side. Check to be sure.

Re: Tilt Tube on wrong side?

If its indeed a 1975 70 the side of the tube the cable threads on there will be more threads. If its a port entry now you simply (hopefully) turn the tube around. Both threads are the same. When you look at it you will see right away the exit side has only a few threads showing past the nut while the entry side has many more.

Good luck!
