I need to replace a tilt tube on a 1990 Black Max 200. Should i release the pressure on the tilt trim unit before I remove the old tilt tube? My concern is that if its pressurized when I remove the old tilt tube it will make it hard to align the transom brackets with the pivot tube. Any advice?
Thanks

Re: Tilt tube replacement

Hang the motor straight up and down (support the weight). Release trim/tilt manual release. Remove the tilt tube nuts from each end. Find a dowel to fit the inside of the tilt tube. Insert that into the tilt tube and let a few inches stick out. Place the new tube over the exposed dowel and tap through with a plastic or rubber mallet. It would be a good idea to take one of the nuts and screw it flush with the end of the pounded end of the new tilt tube to protect the threads.

It the motor is off the boat, it's a much easier job.

Re: Tilt tube replacement

Many thanks for the info. I have a hoist & lift eye available for the task. I know the tilt ram pulls down with tremendous force so I was pretty sure the system would need to be depressurised but I wasnt sure. I bought new bushings, nuts O rings etc so I should be in good shape.
Thanks again, Dave
