Tilt tube threads?

My new home built has a teleflex steering cable, but my engine is a '61 fastwin 18hp. I'm having a time trying to figure out how to link the two. It's looking like a 'custom' job is needed because the motor well is to tight for the ezglide setup (plus that costs more then the motor!)

I was thinking of using a tilt tube, and making a bracket to hold it. Are all the threads the same (where the teleflex cable screws on)? What is the size, and thread size?

Thanks for any help. I'll see about some pics soon.

Re: Tilt tube threads?

The thread spec on a Teleflex cable is 7/8" x 14 TPI
The actual OD measurement of the tube itself can vary, I've seen straight 7/8" and some 1" OD tubes but all the threads are the same on the cable entry end.
There are some Mercury motors which use a 7/8" thread on one end and a 1" thread on the other where the cable comes out of the tube.

You can make an adapter plate by taking a 10 1/2" x 4" or so piece or 1/4" aluminum plate and U bolting on a tilt tube. Mount the tube with the threaded ends protruding past the end of the plate so you can fit the cable nut onto the tube. Most steer tubes measure between 12" and 13" long, with the majority being closer to 12 1/8".

If you intend to make a tube, you can determine the proper ID of the tube if you simply measure the cable OD and allow for about .020" extra for clearance and lube to prevent rust.
