tilt vs trim

My 74 Merc 1150 on 79 18-foot Glassmaster has the mountings for external tilt cylinders. I understand how both tilt and trim tabs work but I'd like some advice on their installation and use.

First, it seems that trim tabs would be easier to install, especially the electric ones. For getting out of the hole and then getting up to speed, would it be preferable to have trim tabs instead of outboard tilt?

Second, if I did find an affordable tilt assembly (under $200), would I find the need for trim tabs in the future?

When pulling a skier, how do you use the tabs?
Thanks!

Re: tilt vs trim

Greg, The need for tabs varies depending the the type of boat and it's use. Tabs are very good for getting stern heavy boats on plane, and for keeping the bow down for a better ride in rough water.

A lot of outboard boats do not have heavy sterns, and have plenty of power. I do not think they will benefit too much from tabs, especially if they operate in calm water.

All boats will benefit a great deal from PTT however. Just so you know, on your outboard, you will need the external trim pump, four hydraulic hoses, two power trim brackets and two trim cylinders, plus the wiring harness and switch. The good news is that installation is easy!
