OMC 1986 4.6 , Not cobra. Tilt works fine when its not running , but when I run it for a couple hours the Tilt will not go up. I can here the trim doing something but seems to go down a little. When I rested the motor for about 20 minutes the tilt worked again with no issues. Solenoid or something getting hot ?
Thanks

Try lightly tapping on the side of the motor when it does not work. If it starts running when you tap on it then the brushes in the motor need some attention.

Since the drive goes up and down at different times then it appears that it is not low on oil. The pump motor is basically the same as the older stringer models and uses some of the electrical parts since they are made by Prestolite.

Ok, Yeah just got this boat and don't really know about how OMC Sterndrive works Trim/tilt. Learning now!!!
I guess the trim works on pump style and moves the engine not the lower unit and the tilt works on a electric motor and moves the the clutch housing gears. ( the lower unit moves fast while going down)

The tilt works when not in use or little time on the water. When I drive it more than an hour the tilt stops working. If I let it sit for a while it works again.

The trim sounds like its trying to work but sounds like the fluid in the reservoir hose is just not making the right noise ( can't think of the term you use)

I have read that you really don't need the trim on these type of lower units ? so, not to worried about that. (right now)ing

Just concerned about the tilt so I can get it off the water if it really starts to go to crap.

Would love to fix this myself. Where should I start on troubling shooting this ?

Thanks for your help.

Correct. You only want to run the stern drive in the full down position (you can tilt up for shallow water if you keep your speed to just above idle), but you can trim as you like.

The tilt works when not in use or little time on the water. When I drive it more than an hour the tilt stops working. If I let it sit for a while it works again.
Kenny's suggestion on the motor is probably the best starting point. They're notoriously finicky. Might check to see if the battery is fully charged, trunions are greased and the clutch pack is full of lube too. But ultimately, most bettin' folk are going to watch that motor.

The trim sounds like its trying to work but sounds like the fluid in the reservoir hose is just not making the right noise ( can't think of the term you use)
Might not be priming? Maybe the motor needs rebuilt if the reservoir is full? (Never had that kind of trim, so I'm just pot-shotting)

Trim isn't essential. You'll get a little better efficiency, or speed using trim, but inland waters it's not critical.

Ok guys i feel like a real Idiot here. Its a 4.3 liter. Now where is the tilt motor located ? I looked around and could not find it. Anybody could stear me in the right direction...... Thanks

Also just wondering I know they did changes to the lower drive after 1985, my title says 1986. My lower unit says V6 and its grey and it has the big rubber seal. So it would be the 800 stringer and not a cobra ? Because every time I look up 4.3 omc it comes up Cobra ?

Ha , don't feel like an idiot . Its buried down low in the bilge on the port side , very hard to access on some boats.

My stringer ownership is tied to my tilt motor going out , I'm never replacing that again . On my boat there is a motor mount literally blocking access , making it very tough to get at.

Yes, you're a Stringer 800 Mechanical Shift. On the engine somewhere ... typically on the starboard side rear engine mount, or around there ... you'll find a tag with a model number on it. Should read something like "432FTMRCOM 1985". It'll tell you what you for sure have.

1986 was the first year for the Cobra, but if your boat manufacturer still had Stringers in stock ... they were puttin' 'em in boats. So, it's not unusual to have a 1986 boat with a 1985 drive in it.

The tilt motor on my old boat (stringer electric shift) was hard to get to, but not as hard as Redrigs. If I took a seat out, and removed the engine doghouse, it wasn't the worst thing I've ever had to do.
