Tilt works every now and then

I have an '89 Skeeter bass boat w/ an '84 Yamaha 175. The tilt just started acting quirky. It will work one minute..and the next, it is doing nothing but clicking in the motor (like a relay mounted to it). There are a few relays on the side of the engine. I can hear the clicks but cant pinpoint which one. What procedure can I follow to determine what the problem is? Is it the relay, or some other source. Thanks

I don`t know what your mechanical ability is and it may take more than one of you to figure it out, but you can jump the solinoid and see if your trim motor is running but you need to know how a solenoid works.

The trim motor works. Its selective on when it wants to. I had the engine running earlier, and for a brief moment, the tilt kicked in. I went up with it, and then back down. Afterwards, it stopped while I had the trim button pressed. It went back to clicking in the relay. Are you talking about the starter solenoid? If so, how would it relate to the trim power?

I'm not sure on the Yamaha's, but there should be one relay for up and one for down. Put your finger on what you think is the relay and have someone push the up or down button and feel for the click. Sometimes the relay connections get dirty and corroded. Remove them and clean them up(Terminals on relays) and see if that helps. Lubedude is not talking about the starter selenoid. Sometimes they have selenoids for the tilt and trim..Depends on the style they used for your particular motor...

Relays and solenoids work the same, sometimes it`s just what the manufacture wants to call them. They both allow a higher power to go to a light, motor etc. that requires a lot of Amperage without the actual load going through the switch. Thus, driving lights starters and winches all either have a relay or a solenoid.

Rick is on the money. Take every terminal connection off (one at a time) lightly sand with 100 grit emery cloth and re-install tight. If that was the problem then you can lightly coat the tightened terminals with either grease or you can go as far as liquid tape. My Mariner has 3 solinoids one for starter and two for T & T. On an old Johnson I had there was a seperate box.

Regardless of what you have the terminals need to be cleaned. That usually repairs the problems.

Thank you fellas'. I will try to clean the terminals this weekend when I have the opportunity to do so. I will reply with my results to let you all know the outcome.

OK.... I cleaned all the connections. I did not fix my problem. Like I said....the tilt work occasionally. It worked on the up and down today for about 15 seconds and went back to clicking. NOTE. This was before I cleaned and sanded all the connections. It worked and stopped. I then sanded all connections. Three solenoids looked to bridged together. I want to say that one may be for the up trim, the other for down, and the third for the starter. Can on bad one affect all three? Can I check them somehow individually check each with a test light or something to determine if one is bad? Thanks

Check your wiring from the relays to the trim motor aswell, make sure there the wires are not shafed anywhere and touch a ground. If the wires run in to a wire loom open it up and inspect them, also where the wires go through the cover.
