I have a 1986 Johnson 50 hp. outboard on a 1957 Skagit Express. Using the tilt lever doesn't release the arms that hold it in place. My wife and I each get on opposite sides of the motor and move them so I can tilt the motor. Is there supposed to be a spring or something that is missing that pulls the arms into the tilt position? Also, it is a great motor but I can't raise it from inside the boat even after releasing the motor from the ground (I'm 76 and not very strong). Is adding an electric tilt motor a big, expensive deal? How about adding some verticle post to gain leverage? We use the boat mostly in the San Juan Islands of Washington where we like to beach it (few docks and they are usually full in good weather). Help!

Re: Tilting 50 hp Johnson

I know where the release is and do lift it all the way up. It moves the latch part way but not enough to release so I have to go in on each side and move the release by hand. Then I can lift the motor from the ground but not from in the boat. The lever at the site says "up to 40 hp" Mine is 50 hp. Any other ideas?
