Time for a rebuild ? Or other input ?

Hi its been a long time since I have been here, 5 years ago or so I rebuilt my 84 Baja SS . Well the boat is doing great but the 84 engine 150 hp V6 black max seems to be getting tired.

Discription of the problem , is starting and idle. It has always started very well press on the key 10 seconds crank her over and off ya go . but the last 2 years it has gotten more and more picky. It will fire a couple of times then die and you keep cranking on it. Nothing .. you choke it again .. nothing .. it acts as if it is flooded. I have tried to pump the bulb again and not gotten any result. More choke no result. it smells as if it is flooded , and I would not doubt it. Plugs are new. Fuel is fresh. Ok LAST RESORT and please dont beat me, I cringe when I think that I used starting fluid.. but when you have a boat full of people on a 90 degree day ...... Sorry black max ... But it did start it.

Idle is not smooth and it dies off too. makes it tough to maunver at low speeds.

I have rebuilt the carbs twice now. Which reminds me of another question. has any one else ever had the floats rub on the bowl and cause them to stick?? The seem to be the very hard foam type . can you trim them back a little?

Normally it runs pretty good for a engine thats heading toward 30 years old. I just wonder if the seals in the engine are causing vacuum leaks ?

I have not checked compression real reciently but it had been 120 +- 2 or 3 psi.

I hate not having a engine not run when I get to the lake!

Sounds to me like unsuccessful carb maintenance. Idle circuits can be very challenging. She may also need a link 'n' synch.

I never saw any outboard, even a Merc, wear out. Well maintained, 30 years is well broken in.

Good luck, and let us know what happens. :)

Try to rebuild the fuel pump. Then replace all the rubber hoses.Ethanol is messing with the rubber on the older motors.J

The fuel pump is a good thought. I cannot remeber if I rebuilt that or not. I will pull the carbs again and go through them. There is no adjustment as far as setting any jetting on them, unless I am missing something?. I will recheck the linkages when I have it down. Any thoughts on the float rubbing on the bowl ?? I have caught needle valve stuck ( lake superior ! ) fixed it with a rock ... tap tap.

If they're made of foam, and you trim some away, you're going to change the level of fuel in the bowl which will mess with your jets, and cause flooding/ rich situations, are you sure there isn't something worn on them (the pins they pivot on) to cause them to not stay in place? BTW I'm an auto mechanic, not a boat mechanic, but i believe the floats still operate the same?

First, check compression again.

Spark test.

When both of these check out fine then order carb rebuild kits AND new floats.

Rebuild fuel pump, replace ALL fuel lines AND re-circ hoses.
