Ok old transom almost out and the deck comes out next. I think it's time to start ordering some supplies. I can figure out the quanity of each item just have some questions about the types of items I need. Here goes!

PAINT
Topside = Interlux brightside
1. Bottom should I do everything on the bottom with bottom coat paint? Or do I need to paint everything under the waterline with bottom coat and the rest above the water with brightside paint?
2. Is precoat good for everything? Inside boat outside the boat or do I need something different for each?
3. What fillers do I need to fix unwanted screw holes nicks dings and such?
4. Do I use brightside for inside the boat aswell?

GLASS
5. When I cut out my deck I need to do the top and bottom of the new ply with glass correct?
6. Any wood I add to the boat needs glass seat boxes, side panels etc.?
7. I'm doing the transom, deck, and some seat boxes mabey side panels. What size mats will I need?
8. If I find I need to do a hull repair will I need anything different?
9. Other than resin what other items should I have on hand? cabosil talc wood powder or dust or somehthing like that?

Plywood
10. I go to home cheapo what is the name of the plywood I need to ask for?
(Doing the transom and deck)
11. I can figure out the thickness for the transom but my deck right now is about an 1/8 of an inch resin/fiberglass deck. Should I stick with that size ply or do I need to go thicker if so how much?
I think that is it for now I'm sure I'll think of other stuff later. If you see items I may need that not mention please be sure to mention them.
Thanks for the help

If you have yet to buy the wood for the transom it might make sense to hold off on the finish products, lots of deals on craigslist when time is on your side. You might not get to the painting for 8 months.

I used PT exterior grade from depot, let it dry out if its wet.
Plenty of time to do it right.

Wait until the last minute for this, as you may change your mind as you get into the restore.

GLASS
5. When I cut out my deck I need to do the top and bottom of the new ply with glass correct? Correct

6. Any wood I add to the boat needs glass seat boxes, side panels etc.?

7. I'm doing the transom, deck, and some seat boxes mabey side panels. What size mats will I need? 1.5oz is the most popular. Get some thin cloth as well, as some parts just need waterproofing and mat soaks up too much resin for that task.

8. If I find I need to do a hull repair will I need anything different? I used mat, but biax works best from what I read

9. Other than resin what other items should I have on hand? cabosil talc wood powder or dust or somehthing like that? Cabosil, 3m bubbles and wax. Wood powder isn't a bad idea either. Talc is iffy, imo, as it is heavy and can't go below waterline

Plywood
10. I go to home cheapo what is the name of the plywood I need to ask for? Personal preference. Do some reviewing of other projects and decide on your own. I used BC exterior plywood, some use marine grade, some use pressure treated and let it dry out.

11. I can figure out the thickness for the transom but my deck right now is about an 1/8 of an inch resin/fiberglass deck. Should I stick with that size ply or do I need to go thicker if so how much? 1/8" is really thin. Is that a typo? I think most of us use 1/2" or 5/8" ply for our decks. Some use 3/4", but that is a rare few. Get the manual for your engine. It will dictate the transom thickness you will want. Read up on the transom replacements on here, as there are multiple ways to create a new transom.

Good luck!

Thanks Jon but I hope it doesn't take me 8mos to get to paint  It's only a 13.5 footer and the stringers are all fiberglass no wood. For now though I will hold off on the paints.

No typo 1/8" resin/glass molded floor. It's like an insert or something you can see it in my rebuild thread. Also if you look where the holes are cut into the floor (by the last owner) there is a drain plug for the floor and then one that sat under the floor. Should I leave that in and make a bilge area or just fill it now that the floor will be sealed?
So one layer of 1.5 mat on each side of the transom and deck should be enough? I saw that some use woven rover also? As far as the thinner cloth for the waterproofing jobs do you mean like 1.0 or .5?
Do I need chopped mat filler to make a filler for around the transom or will that be what the wood dust is for? I assume all this will be done with expoxy resin correct? (I forgot to ask)

Re: Time to order some stuff Lots O' questions

Alright floor is up and transom almost out. So a few more questions and I should be ready to order.
1. How many layers glass on the transom?
2. Do I put one layer of glass on each side of the inner layers of the transom?(If I use 2-3 1/2" pieces and put them together to make 1" to 1 1/2")
3. How many layers on the deck? (1- 1.5 CSM or should I use a combo of CSM and 1708 or Biax or Woven Roving)
4. How do I know which resin I need? Poly or Epoxy?
5. After I lay the deck in do I just use fillet around the edges or a combo of fillet and then tape?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Time to order some stuff Lots O' questions

Not to be lazy and avoid answering your questions directly, but these questions are answered many times over in other restoration threads. I'd highly advise reading some other threads first, as not only will they answer these questions, you will have a much (much) better understanding of the process and be able to envision your next few steps in your head rather than working from a "Okay, this is done, what now?" approach, which can lead to expensive backtracking (or worse, jerry rigging).

If, after reading at least a few of the other threads (the threads from oops! and myself are a good start, check completed restores, too) you still have questions (or have new ones), then direct answers will be more helpful, as everyone will know the 'whys' of the answers. For example, # of layers on the transom varies depending on type of glass and what you are mounting.. if i were looking to install a 454 I'd put a few more layers, but a 3.0L isn't going to stress it as much. Also, if i used 2oz mat and woven roving, I'd likely only need 2 layers, as they are both thick, strong glass by themselves. Soem question have no exact answer and learning from the experience of others is not only a good reason for this site, but also a good method of approaching your project.

Cheers

As for the transom layers, plan accordingly because depending on what motor and drive you have the transom will need to fall into a thickness specification. Mercruiser (for the manual I have) says min 2" max 2-1/4"

So laminate the two pieces of transom together with csm in the middle. Then how ever u decide to laminate to the hull, then measure your thickness and add from there. This is coming from my I/O experience tho. Im a noob so take what I say with a grain of salt :)

Awesome I will reread the threads you mentioned and see if I can pick out the answers I need. I do understand that these are answered somewhere on this site so I will continue to read thru the threads. I'm running a 87 50hp Force outboard So I will also see what is recommended for that motor.
Alrighty then back to the threads!
