Time to reseal the gearcase

I had a lot of milkshake in the gearcase last fall when drained, so it's time. E90/140TLCN. I've had two shops quote to do the job and both say "2 hours plus parts". Local rate is about $120/h. Good deal or DIY?

I checked out a pretty comprehensive video online and the guy was using a seal puller with slide hammer. I don't have one or access to one and buying it would probably kill any savings. I like to do as much as possible myself but leave some jobs to the pros. This may be one of those.

I use a slide hammer with a two jaw puller to remove old seals but I am sure there are many ways to skin the cat. Everyone should own a little slide hammer anyways...

That looks remarkably similar to a pilot bearing puller. Bet I could rent one easy. I have a vacuum tester with gauge, but not a suitable pressure tester, although I've used a small bike pump to test other things.

On the "time to water" front, we still have 3' of snow on the lawn and the lake is frozen solid. I have time to do this fix.

Thoughts on BP vs Sierra parts? Difference is about $40 - $70 or $110.

That seconds my opinion. My parts guy says BRP doesn't make a "kit" like Sierra and he has to put the parts together individually, and it would be $110 plus shipping.

Best to find another " parts guy " in my opinion !----I see the same kit from 1985 to 2011 for many models of V-4 motors.

I used him for all the parts on my rebuild and that went perfectly. You saying there is a kit?

Do you know with any certainty what year your gearcase is , yes or no ?

Absolute certainty: E90TLCNB - 1982. Dad bought it brand spanking new in '83 and it has never been apart, just annual oil changes and the odd water pump.

On the last gearbox of mine i did, it may of being a merc, well i didnt have a slide hammer either.
So i removed the prop and then i drilled a hole in a block of wood and slipped that down the propshaft.
I then put back on the prop and tightened down the nut. As the nut is tightened the bearing carrier slowly pulls out.

I may of slightly heated the casing beforehand too. Never ever go to a shop !

Parts guy says that's for '86 and up. I'm going to make a list from the brp cat.

I do have an harmonic balancer puller and long bolts, so the carrier isn't my concern (unless I find it seized). The utube dude with the slide hammer was using a pilot bearing puller to take out the seals.

Just getting around to this. Waterpump impeller is stuck on the driveshaft. In all the times I've replaced it, I've never had one stuck. Impeller is in perfect shape so I'll be miffed if I have to cut it off. I think I used a non BRP kit last time...

Got the impeller off this evening after 2 days soaking the joint with Liquid Wrench.
