Timer base issues

I was wondering if anyone knows... Is there anything in particular a timer base will do if going bad or is bad? You know something that points to it and you know it has a problem is what I'm saying. I got a 1992 Evinrude 60 horse engine and it has always run excellent with no issues at all. I let it set for about a month and a half, went to get it and start it and it had no fire. Well right off the bat I thought power pack. I bought one put it on and it fired right up. But now it has a wild fluctuating idle... When you put it in gear and take off from putting to full throttle it runs great...

Just at idle it is up and down jerking wildly. Now if I disconnect the timer from the linkage and advance the timing it runs much better and doesn't jerk nowhere near as much but as soon as it goes back it gets all jerky and fluctuating up and down and acting weird. Never had anything like this happen before as this engine has always run like a top. No spark, put on power pack ( yes it is the right one ) and now thew idle issue. A year or so back I put Boyesen power reeds and new gaskets so I know there is no intake leak.

ANy thoughts on the issue would be appreciated. I haven't done any tests yet and wanted to see what anyone else thought about it that has a lot of experience.. Yhanks in advance for any thoughts and or ideas...

Re: Timer base issues

If you just put a new pack on it check the timer base connections going to the pack for being loose, corroded or broken. Also make sure the pack has a good clean ground.
