I have an Evinrude 1985 model E150STLCOS. I have replaced the timing arm ball and sockets. The problem is that the timer base is very sticky/hard to move. It is not allowing the timing to go to full advance, and when the throttle is back to idle it is not letting the timing go back, thus keeping the idle high. Any suggestions on how/what to lube the timer base with?

Re: Timer Sticky

just had a similar issue with my 96 200. first we sprayed it with some WD, which helped a little, but we finally took off the fly wheel and pulled it off, lightly sanded the outside there was a small broke piece of plastic underneath it, not helping things. Cleaned up every thing made sure it was free of rubbing any wires and now it moves like its supposed too. Now if I could just figure out what else is wrong with it.

Re: Timer Sticky

is it sticky because the stator is leaking black goo onto it??? if so your regulator may be bad..and your stator may be ready to go also.

Re: Timer Sticky

Not unusual for the original factory grease to dry out over the years, restricting the movement of the timer base. You will find it works better if you relube it. Pull the flywheel and stator to access the timer base. A white lithium grease works well on these timer bases, it's slippery and stays pliable in cold weather.

Re: Timer Sticky

I just got my factory manuel last night. I can take the flywheel off and see what is going on. Anyone have the part number of the puller used to remove teh flywheel? Thanks again,---

I use a harmonic balancer puller from harbor frieght. I also use a air impact wrench to remove flywheel nut.
