timing 1969 55 hp evinrude

Tunned her up last season and read in the manual about the timing but didn't have a test wheel ect. I advanced the timing slightly. The engine ran better at full throttle with a few more RPM's and higher top end. My question, is there any signs that indigate too advanced at top speed? possible damage? (I was following some advice from from 4 stroke mech's who say advance until she talks to you and then back off) Ran great all last season no over heating ect. Just wanted to ask before I try the 2 nontest wheel methods listed here in the forums

The ignition you have (CD battery points) I believe you can static time. That is, time it at idle & it should be the same at WOT. <br /><br />The 55hp triples are mildly-tuned & you may be able to get away with a little more lead. However, I don't think you'll generally hear the motor knocking, like you might in a 4stroke car engine, so be careful. The first sign you may find of too-advanced timing may be a melted piston top. <br /><br />Make sure the carbs are super clean and it is propped so that it will pull 6000.

6000 RPM can they handle that? The most I can get is 5000. Thanks for the advice I will try the static method that was posted for another question - I don't want to melt a piston. One other thing, I was getting a lot of unburned fuel/oil mixure draining out the exhaust as well as into the vacuum switch (keeps the motor in neutral when turned off). Once I advanced the timing, this stopped. Carbs were rebuilt, new plugs. Changed the points cleaned the cap and rotor.

OBJ,<br /><br />I want to check the timing on my 1969 55hp. I want to use this method, because it has the points & CDi ignition will I still have o retard 4 degrees? I advanced the timing last year slightly because I was experiencing similar problems - poor top end as well as a lot of unburnt fuel mixure coming back through the carbs

I would suggest that you do a spark test I have an engine just like that one and it bogged down until it got to high speed and then ran good I rebuilt the carbs twice trying to fix it and it turned out to be the amplifier was not suppling enough spark ( amplifier bought new 4 months ago ) I put a coil and condenser on it and did away with the amplifier and it runs great now. That engine can not handle 6000 rpms they should be around 5000

Thanks Reelsport,<br />The motor wasn't bogging at low RMP's it just didn't have much top end at WOT. I will check the spark though and go from there. Do you know if the Joe Reeve's method will work for these older engines? Is the delay (4 degrees) the same as newer models? spark gap with test plug at 7/16"?
