Timing advance?

'85 Mercruiser V6 4.3L
I have set my timing at idle to 8* BTDC per the manual. my question is: My timing light does not have the advance feature, but when I increased the rpm's the mark did advance but it moved to the left which took it to a higher number BTDC. Is that correct?

thanks! The timing was way off, so now I'm hoping maybe that will solve my problem of the engine bogging down and stalling when trying to go to WOT!
