I have a 115 hp 1997 Johnson that I am trying to tune. I have the Solec (Chiltons of the sea) manual but it is not very clear. I was able to synchronize the two carbs using the manual but I am having problems trying to set the timing.
When I sync'd the carbs, I backed off on follower "E" and with both carbs fully closed took the slack out of "F". Then I checked and both carbs opened simultaneously. Then I moved follower "E" back until it was just touching the cam "C" and tightened it down.
First I checked the timing pointer using a dial indicator in the #1 cylinder to find TDC. It is set exactly so that at TDC the pointer is at 0?.
For the total timing (maximum spark advance) I had the boat running in the water at full speed (about 5100 rpms) and made adjustments to "A" to bring the timing in to spec (26? before TDC). That worked fine.
Now I checked the base timing (at idle) which is supposed to be 3?-5? degrees before TDC and it is at 1? AFTER TDC . The book says to adjust "B" to change. Well, when I do that it only moves about 1? and the idle RPM's rocket up to about 1200.
Then the book mentions adjusting "D" for the timing pickup, I assume this means to set cam "C" to be just touching follower "E" for timing to throttle synchronization, after adjustments where made to the timing, is that correct?
How do you adjust the idle speed on this motor? The book says turn screw "B" (which makes no sense because they said earlier that this is used to adjust the base timing) but I had that backed out all the way and the RPM's didn't change.
How do you adjust the base timing, total timing and idle speed?
THANK YOU for any help you can give me, I am at a loss right now on what to do.
Bill
