I have a 97 evinrude 9.9hp 4 stroke Hi thrust motor used on a sailboat so it doesn't get that much use. Just wonder if anybody knows that the life expectancy is for a timing belt. It looks pretty good to me with no obvious defects. I keep the motor indoors over the winter but with a new shed I was thinking about keeping it outside. Do you think the cold temps in NJ will increase the aging of the timing belt or other rubber parts ??

I think you will be fine. I would, however, check with a service manual and see what the recommended change interval is.

A dealer should be able to tell you also.

I think my manual for my 9.9 Johnny 4 stroke said to replace at 400 hours, or maybe it was adjust tension.

Manual and engine are gone now, so I can't confirm.

Good luck. :)

My Mariner 50 4s owners manual says replace it if found to have excessive wear at roots of cogs, cracks in belt, belt rough, swollen by oil or signs of wear. There's no info on preventive maintenance changes in hours or time...but then again this is a sparse manual. The belt on my 1996 still looks minty at 600+ hrs and the motor is normally used at slow rpms (1500-4000).

I don't recall seeing anything about life expectancy in my service manual. I guess so much depends on many variables that it would be hard to predict. I have replaced almost everything that one would expect to wear out. Fuel pump, water pump, powerpack, stator, rectifier, control cables to mention a few.
PS. Thanks for your replies
