looking to confirm the timing for an in-line 6cly 115 mariner, I need the cranking timing ref, the wide open throttle, and idle if you know it.

thanks

You can find all the specs in the FAQ here..

This basic procedure will work for all the 2/3/4/6 cylinder inlines from 1960 to 1988. It's not for the newer 3 and 4 cylinder loopers.
It WILL cover your "1989" as it WAS produced in 1988 ( 1988 was the last year for the classic inline 6 engines ... )

thanks for that tidbit of information, but I need the numbers for confirmation of what they say it is suppossed to be. WOT is around 25 degrees, I think, but don't want a scorched piston.
thanks for any information, and thanks again for the link.

Well all the magic number can be found in the FAQ...
Set the max-advance stop to 21 degrees for "direct charge" crossflow inlines
Max advanced timing can be set by running the engine by starter ( only #1 in engine, NO fuel to carbs, FULL throttle ), timing should the be 20>21 degrees ( will be retarded to 18 degrees at WOT by the swichboxes them self ).
P.S disconnect the wires for the "idle advance module" during timing adjustment...

OR by running the engine at WOT, should the be 18 degrees max advance...

25 degrees WILL putt your pistons at BIG risk !!

And "around" are NOT a good term when timing a classic inline....

18 WOT, idle time "is what it is" to get RPM below 1000. Primary advance timing is 5-7 ATDC, not before like stated in that i-boats thing from Wayne. (this is as per my Merc factory manual)
