I have a 1996 Mercruiser 4.3 liter and it doesn't like anything under 15 deg BTDC to run. The problem is I replaced the motor(it was a 1995 motor with the steel timing cover)with a newer one (1999) that has the plastic cover and there is no timing marks on it.My damper is not degreed,so I ordered timing tape for 6.75 inch chevy damper because the plastic cover unlike the metal one has no timing marks. I can only assume the timing tape and plastic cover combo are causing a false reading?? When I set it to 8 deg BTDC it runs rough and stalls unless you ease into the throttle, and it revs very slow and runs rough through the entire throttle range.I had it timed by ear before I got the tape, and it was a bit far advanced, because you could hear the starter drag and it was pinging (detonating)when you rev it.When I installed the tape it was at 30 deg before TDC(according to the tape, plastic cover combo) when I turn down the timg it seems to run ok until you get below 15-16 deg BTDC where it runs rough and has no power and takes a lot longer to rev.At 15 or 16 degrees it doesn't have the starter drag and seems to run good, and I don't hear a ping. What should I do?
