Timing light question

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but do I need a special timing light to check the timing on my '89 XP150? I tried an old one that I borrowed yesterday, but it didn't seem to work. It was the type that connects to the spark plug and then the plug wire connects to it. It seemed to work okay (other than not being very bright. . . . or maybe that was just the operator?!) until I gave it full throttle. I think maybe the strobe wasn't fast enough to keep up with a 2-stroke running at WOT? Will a relatively inexpensive, newer inductive pickup timing light work, or do I need a special one for 2-stroke motors?

They'll work fine, hook to #1 cylinder plug wire.

The one I have, has the pick-up that clamps around the plug wire.

I believe yours should work, though , I haven't used the type you describe.

Those are in-line type strobes and they are a little sensitive. The inductive pickup types are much better. If you can get the type you have to flash it will work.

Have had that same problem with that same type of timing light. Worked well at low rpm. Would not work over 3500 rpm. Solution: I bought another timing light. This one has the inductive lead and is OK.

Thanks for the replies, guys. So it sounds like I don't need to spend $100+ on some super-duper light - probably a $30 or whatever "cheapie" will work as long as it is the newer inductive type?

Yeah, just save your receipt & packaging. There's no telling if it's going to be happy with the short ignition pulse from the CDI pack, just try and see. Money is no indicator. Some cheapies work great, some expensive lights do not. If you're having trouble picking up the signal, try flipping the pickup over.

Re: Timing light question

I bought an Innova equus timing light, at a auto parts store. (chain store).

Its a common brand and has worked great .

And was fairly cheap, $ 40.00 or so.

Just thought I'd mention it , in case you run up on one.
I also have a craftsman , its very good as well, just a little more money.

I bought the Innova to use until , a borrower decided he could still find my home , to return craftsman.
