i have no timing mark on my johnson 28hp spl. there are numbers on the flywheel and mixed in with those numbers is a "T". a boat shop owner said that i have to get piston 1 at tdc then look on the fly wheel and there will be a top dead center mark. he said to make a mark on the motor where ever that tdc mark on the flywheel lands when piston is at top. is there an easier way to do this?

Re: timing mark

That's as easy as it gets. Once the #1 piston is at TDC make a mark or a pointer to line up with the "T". Now you can check the timing as usual.

Re: timing mark

Youll need a timing light.
In my after market manual the timing mark appears to be on the recoil housing.
seems to be a split or v groove. On electric start it is on the top of the starter mount.Looking down at the starter.Timing needs to be set on the boat at speed.
Numbers on the flywheel are the degrees.29-31 degrees on models 86 and later.

Re: timing mark

Ok... that sounds straight forward. but.. what mine has two diff. sets of timing marks and numbers. one set h as electric beside it and the other rope, i am assuming that this means pulling with a rope vs letting the starter turn the motor over.

the one with eletric ... the t lands just over the carb. does this sound right. does it even matter where the t lands?

last thing. i may have a faulty timing gun ... all i get out of it is a dimm flash of light but this gun is very old... i have the spark plugs removed so all im doing is turning the motor over not actually running it..

THANK YOU

Re: timing mark

there is a "bar" that sits up high on the starter and when at tdc it apears to fall within the markings on the fly wheel.. does this sound correct. also, the timing cam has been played with so much i cant even get the motor to run just above idle it cuts back and keeps studdering untill i cut it back.

Re: timing mark

Just bring the top piston to top dead center and see what marks like up with what.
