Re: timing marks on motor/pulley HELP!!

Caravelle, the metal tang with the teeth and the timing mark on the flywheel needs to be cleaned up if rusted and unreadable. Take a piece of medium sandpaper and lightly clean the tang up. Rotate the crank so you can see the timing mark on the balancer. Use either a grease pencil or color crayon and completely cover the tang and slot in balancer. Then wipe the marker off surface of the tang and balancer. This will highlight the marks and make them easier to see when you do the actual timing.

Re: timing marks on motor/pulley HELP!!

i can see the mark on the pulley, and i can see the lines on the teeth. my question i guess is, there is six points on the thing. is 0 right in the very middle or is it offset to one side. also, when i try to set the timing, the motor starts sounding like its missing and dies. i can just turn the distributor manually without using the light and get it to where it runs and sounds really smooth.

Im kinda lost, the flame arrestor cover says 1BTDC and people on here say 8BTDC. then when i unhook the jumper wires, the mark on the pulley is WAAAY before the teeth, not even close to it.

Re: timing marks on motor/pulley HELP!!

after i get it into base timing mode, i turn the distributor to get it to 1BTDC. when it gets to about 3BTDC it starts to run really rough. by the time its at 1BTDC, it dies. how do i get around this problem? is there an easier way to set time?
