Timing must continually be advanced to keep engine running

Okay, I have figured out what is happening, I just can't figure out why. I have a 35hp Chrysler '74 2 stroke. My magneto ignition system went out so I bought a 12v coil system for it. The engine is set at tdc and the timing aligned. When the engine is started it runs smooth. Adter 3-4 seconds it starts spitter sputtering because the timing has retarded itself. If I advance the timing as it runs, slowly in a counter clockwise motion I can keep it running until it turns as far as it will go. What can be causing this? The flywheel key is fine and it shouldn't matter anyway because it doesn't use the magneto anymore. PLEASE HELP! What can cause this? A slipping lobe on the main crankshaft where the points contact?

Problem solved... The problem all along was the key on the lobe for the points. It was sheared and slowly turning around the shaft at a slower rate....

that's a new one! And thanks for posting the cure too. Most of the time, the problems posted here are open-ended, not knowing whether the problem was ever sovled or the parts ended up on ebay :D
