timing off

hey... what could cause the timing mark to fall 60 degrees off when I've checked tdc on # 1 ? As I tried to move the distributor to correct the problem it runs worse until it quits. 87 3.0 mercruiser. I've reset the valves after a couple of bent push rods. NOT really sure why they bent.

You can get crossover from the plug wires to the pickup for the timing light. Just move it to the end of #1 where it's not near other plug wires.
May also be moisture in the cap, or tracking. Is the cap and rotor old or new?

thanks Don... I didn't think of that. I've replaced all of the components on the distributor.

Bent pushrods? and your timing has moved? You better check your cam timing, cam gear, or timing chain, (not sure which) on that motor, could be the pistons hitting the valves.
