Is there any fairly accurate way to check timing on the engine without actually going WOT on the lake? Have a 87 Force 50 hp Model C.

Sure just run it on water to get the pump wet, then take the plugs out and ground the one plug for the gun. Ground the rest of the wires and hook the timing gun up. Unhook the throttle and move it WOT on the motor so its against the max timing stop, hit the starter and check your timing. I unhook the fuel, but it really does not suck without plugs to make compression if you are doing a quick check.

Pull the plugs out, reconnect them to the wires and ground the shells. Next jumper the neutral safety switch if you have one. Put the trottle in WOT and hook up the timing light.

If you have a helper, have him/her turn the switch to start while you aim the gun at the flywheel. If you don't have a helper, buy a remote starter switch from Pep Boys or Harbor Freight ($20) and hook it up to the solinoid. Turn the key to on and push the switch.

Set the timing to 2 degrees lower than it is supposed to be and you are set.
