I know this question has been asked many times before
and yes I do have a clymers manual but it is not very clear on the subject. I have done several searches here and have not found anything that answered my question
which is how do you time a 1969 55 hp evinrude. The book says use a timing light on no. 1 cylinder but the only marks on this motor are on the flywheel and rear gear guard. there are 2 on the flywheel one looks like an arrow and the other is straight on the rear gear guard there is a block about 1/4 inch square and when you put the timing light on it at 650 rpms it is so far from lineing up the marks on the flywheel to the mark on the rear gear guard that if this were correct that the engine would not run at all. sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help anyone might offer

The flywheel mark and mark on the ring gear guard line up at full spark advance. You are definatly not going to full advance position at only 650 rpm. Are you trying to do it on muffs? OK, I know you aren't supposed to do it that way, but you can. Here's how: Remove the pivot bolt from the throttle actuating cam and swing the cam away from the carb throttle levers. Then you can run at full advance with blowing the engine apart.
