Timing on an old merc ?

Can anyone give me some info on checking the timing on a 1975 merc 9.8? Serial # is 4084137. It had a degree spec on the flywheel, but it wore off. Do I need a timing light or guage of some sort. I know I need a repair manual, but I'm laid off and they cost about 100 boxes of mac n cheese !

I have a Seloc manual but Im not sure if it goes back that far. I will check and post you the info you need. You will need a timing light, should be able to find a friend with one.
