Does it make a difference if the timing, idle timing is set at 6* on muffs as opposed to in the water the idle on muffs was about 1200rpm's I know this will go down once in the water is that correct? this is on a 91 Fastrike J150GLEI

use joe reeves method , then take it to the water strap to trailer and
run it up to close wot and check if its a little off adjust,
the boat needs to be under load to properly time .
you can time it by joe reeves method without starting it ,so no need for muffs if ya try to time it on muffs you will probaly blow it up you cant turn up near wide openthrottle on muffs plus you will not have the load on motor needed to set it right

Don't get hung up on a number for the idle timing. A lot depends on the application (how deep it sits in the water at idle). Just set the timing for the best idle in the water. On those motors the top end timing is set with an analyzer box. The motor doesn't have to be running.
