I have a 1978 century 23 foot cuddy mercruiser 350 260 hp.This is Jasper rebuild installed last fall. I set the timing at 8 degrees take it out on the water can only get 3400 rpm I moved the distributor till it sounds good and it runs fine. So after I get it home I reset the timing at 8 degrees thinking I must have done something wrong even used a different timing gun. I take it out same problem. played around with the distributor I got it at 3000 rpm at 30 mile per hour. But as soon as you get into the four barrel it dies.

Re: timing or carb?

What kind of distributor do you have, and how did you set the timing? Did the advance work?
You should also check the fuel system,
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=015221#000000

Here is the chart with about everything that could cause the problem. Check off the ones you find are OK.

Re: timing or carb?

Are you still running a points set up? If so check dwell setting. Timing advance should also be checked. Timing should advance from 8* to a total of 32* as RPM's increase.
