Timing problems on 87 9.9hp

I can not get my timing right on my 9.9. I've adjusted everything and the timing marks don't move at all. The 3 timing dots need to move to the left about 3 inches to be at the pointer. The motor runs pretty rough and seems to smoke alot when you go to full trottle. It idles pretty good but I can't get the timing dots to line up when idleing either. I guess my question is where should I begin to look for the problem I have a Intertec outboard service manual but it really doesn't go into any details on this motor. Thanks in advance for any help my fellow Merc owners can give me. I really want to try to get my boat in the water this weekend

As you advance the throttle is the trigger under the flywheel moving or is it sticking

If the trigger is moving then the trigger magbet on the flywheel may be loose, because any rotation of the trigger should change the timing

Re: Timing problems on 87 9.9hp

I just epoxy the magnets back to the fly wheel. I'm thinking about picking up a used flywheel. I have brough it to TDC and the timing dots line up with the timing mark so I guess thats a good thing. I just don't understand why I can't get the timing to move could it be a problem in the carb not letting it go to full trottle. It does sputter a little when you open the trottle all the way. I was thinking it was doing this because of the timing.

Steve, they used 2 or 3 differant ign systems on those engines each has it's own quirks whats the number off your switch box. Even if the magnets were not quit right when you glued them when the trigger moves so should the spark advance. If you turned a magnet around that could cause problems but I don't no if it would even run let alone cause the problem your having

Ck and see if this is your system it's not use on a 9.9 but is on a 9.8, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...nbr=20&bdesc=FLYWHEEL+AND+IGNITION+COMPONENTS
if this is your system I would move my timing lite to the other cyl to see if the advance is working there, this system the trigger picks up it's impluse from the outside magnets on the flywheel so a reversed magnet could be the trouble. If that don't work try a flywheel I am at a loose, the only things that have to do with timing are position of the magnets (flywheel) and the trigger pulse at the right time or WOT if your timing it a WOT when you go to idle the spark should retard or left and on acceleration to WOT it should advance or right

Laddie that's not the setup I have in my motor. This motor is driving me crazy and everyone I've had trying to help me with it. I'm just stumped. I really don't understand why I can't get the timing to move at all. I'm starting to think that I have a new anchor. You've been helpful and I can't thank you enough for your time this morning. I just I should just bite the bullet and take it in to the shop. Thanks again

Steve, go back to the BAM Mrine site with your serial number and look up the engine and get the part number of your switchbox so we can see if we can do more
