timing procedure

just anouther timing question.<br />merc 260 5.7 thunderbolt 1V <br />what is proper procedure to time . i cannot get timing to 8* i keep reading about grounding wires. what wires am i supposed to ground in order to get base timing? complete tune up was done at start of spring. also cannot get idle down to 750rpm.

There is no wire to ground or anything on a Tbolt IV. You just hook up the timing light. But you will have to get the RPM down to 650 or so before you can accurately set the timing. <br /><br />Dave

Try disconnecting your throttle cable. Then use the adjustment on the carb to get the proper idle rpm. Then adjust the cable to ad just a little pressure on the linkage toward the idle position.<br />As Dave said, you need to get the idle down to set the timing.
