I have a 1979 115 I6 the timing should be set at max 21 degrees. I know if you adusted it higher you would burn a piston. What would happen if it was set at 18 degrees?would i not have full power? I have not timed my motor but i think the last mechanic who worked on it set it at 18 because there is a line drawn at 18 and it is writen on the fly wheel.Anyway the boat runs great the way its set. Thanks for the help ypur about to give. Frank

Re: Timing question

You will lose a few RPM at WOT some mechanics retard the timing to prevent preignition, back in the eary 70s there was as service bulletion about it because of the crappy fuel, but engines built after that time were designed to run at the marked advance, some have carried it over on the newer engines as a precaution agains preignition
