Ok achris why does it say on the emission label timining in degrees is not adjustable? so I should have timing at 0-9 ATDC and cranking speed at 25 BTDC and 19 BTDC I have a service manual number og960500 and above can I use that as my guide. How did you determine it is a xr6?
ok... when playing with outboard 'link and sync', first we check/set the pointer position, then we check/set the maximum advance, the full throttle stop, the primary throttle pickup (if applicable) and idle speed. The idle speed is set to an actual engine speed (~650rpm), by adjusting the timing. You don't set the timing to a specific setting, it will be in the range specified when the RPM is correct.
If you haven't done this before, read through the manual several times before you go near an engine.
The 2 advance settings given as maximum advance, one is the setting at cranking speed (~300rpm) the other at WOT. If you are setting the max advance at home/workshop where you can't have the engine running at WOT (without destroying it), then you set it to 26 degrees of advance. Because of characteristics of the igntion system, at the actual WOT (~5500rpm) the advance will be 20 degrees.
Step 1. Check the pointer position
2. Set the carbs to be all opening and closing together.
3. Have the throttle roller set to the right position
4. Set throttle maximum stop
5. Check carb/oil pump sync
6. Check trigger link rod length
7. Set maximum timing
8. Set idle speed with primary pickup
That that, in a nutshell, is how to set up an outboard, but unless the engine has had a strip down or major parts replaced, it should never need adjusting....
Chris.......
Please post a photo of the timing label... (it may be something we don't see in Oz)
