timing whoes & Stuck in forward gear

1969 Mercury 4 cyl Ser.# 2630006 500 (50 hp) bought sec hand , told me needed timing belt. Installed belt put no. 1 cyl tdc. Lined up marks on flywheel and dis. tryed starting, lots of spark but wont start . also cant get sucker out of forward gear , Any help would be very much appreciated Doug in Ontario Canada

If you took the flywheel apart to install the belt you will need to index the flywheel marks by putting something down number 1 cyl and rolling it to TDC and then ck the marks on the flywheel, also you don't use the marks on the plate on the dist drive wheel you use the little arrow that is cast in the wheel under the plate, hope this helps --Bob

HI !! Sorry I took so long to reply , But Ive Given up on that motor , Seames like every time I got one thing working , Something else was going wrong . Took it back to where I bought it before I had a nerveous breakdown , .. Now Proud owner of Johnson , Smaller , But runs& starts fist pull ... Thanks for your help ....Doug
