Hello All,

How do I check the timing on a 1989 48hp Johnson J48ESLCER. where do I point the light and conect the clips. Don't have a manual yet!

Thanks.

Re: timing

Wait until you get the manual. Without it you may adjust the wrong linkage and ruin a perfectly good power head. There are two types of timing lights. The cheapest, dim, and most useless connect in series with the spark plug lead and have no requirement for a 12V connection. Better lights have a positive and negative clip that connect to the battery. The pickup is usually inductive and simply clips around the plug wire for #1 plug. There are two timing specs. The first is at idle and the other is wide open throttle timing. You point the light at the timing marks on the flywheel.
