Timing effects the time that the charge is ignited, it won't alter the mixture as such but it can effect the reading if your analyzing exhaust gas for correct air-fuel ratio. Simply put the more correct the timing, the more efficient the burn will be. <br />Its becoming more common now for computers to advance the timing at idle to increase idle speed rather than nudge the throttle open, its much faster and alterations to idle speed can be made without actually moving anything, of course as engine speed increases the timing reverts back to its normal (conventional) duties.
