1988 Johnson 70HP VRO

I would like to add a tach to this engine and I am trying to determine which Tiny Tach model will work as well as any personal experience.

Here are the choices:

- 2C for 1x per revolution (typically for Briggs, Honda and Kohler type engines)

- 1C for cylinders firing 2x per revolution (2 cylinder personal watercraft such as Seadoos typically fire this way)

- 4C for cylinders firing every other revolution (typically K series Kohler engines)

Has anyone used one on a Johnson? How well did it work?

Welcome aboard Eric!

Are you installing a permanent tach? If so, why not just get a dash tach (they sell them on iboats mega mall or see your local John/Rude dealer) and get a tach harness.....LOL...again you can get that from the iboats mall or any John/Rude dealer....that plugs into the control box and plug and play? Just make sure the tach is can be set for 6 pulse alternator. Most tachs will have a setting on the back to do this.

ORRRRRRR...are we talking something completely different?

Call them you need one with a filter on it cause of the cd ignition. They will know what you need. Plus when you get it you might need to extend the solid red wire and wrap the spark plug wire about 10 times for it to work. After that I had one on my 150 crossflow and it worked great the last two seasons

Jon....seems like a lot of trouble for a tach....when you can install a dash tach and just hook it up to the plug on the control box. Just an opinion here.....that's all.

I would go with OEM or Teleflex, but they only make tachs in the larger diameter. This is for a 15' BW and I think the larger tach will look out of place with the 2" guages that are already in place. Thanks for the help.

I currently have a 96'15 ft Dauntless Whaler w/70 hp Evinrude and have the conventional OMC tach and it looks just fine alongside the trim guage and volt meter. Also had a 83'15 ft BW sport w/70 hp and the OMC tach was mounted on the face of the mahogany console. It also looked just fine.Just a matter of preference I guess.

I have a tinytach and they work great. When I called to order I spke to someone in sales or tech support (not the person who answers the phone). They hooked me up with the right tach and it works great. Just amke sure you order one with extra wiring so it will reach your motor.

Another nice thing is that you really know what your rpm's down to increments of 10.

Obj I put one on to check the accuracy of my teleflex tach. It also works as an hourmeter. I like it, it is very accurate and reads in 50 rpm increments that is great for trolling
