i purchased a tiny tach (from them) that was made for my 70 hp chrysler. most of the time it works great. but, every few minutes of running it seems to give random results. it will jump 3000 rpms and give readings all over the place. after a few minutes it will go back to normal. anybody had this problem?

Re: tiny tach problems

I have a 1979 chrysler skier with a tiny tach and it does the same thing from time to time, but always seems to get back on the right track!

The tach pulls it's signal from the magnetic field off of a spark plug wire. Do you have enough turns around the spark plug wire? Make sure that it is shielded from any other ignition wires. Also make sure that all splices in the wires are in good shape.

mine has 2.5 or 3 wraps (cant remember) but it was done exactly as the techs told me to. its in a good spot, not in contact with any thing else. there are no splices in my cable. not too much of a problem, it usually goes back to the right reading after a minute or so.

Re: tiny tach problems

I know this is an old thread but I recently bought a tiny tach and it worked great for the first hour. After that it would jump around and sometimes show the hours instead of the rpms while running. I called Steve at Tiny Tach and he told me that I needed to make another wrap or two with the red wire on the spark plug wire. I have a 15 foot cable and according to Steve at Tiny Tach, I needed more wraps because of signal loss due to the longer cable. I have about 5 to 6 wraps and it works great. I really like the Tiny Tach.

Re: tiny tach problems

NumbaONE, I have the TT226R-2C which is the standard model that allows the hours to be reset on the hourmeter. I had to call the company and ask which tach to order because the website is very vague and doesn't mention which tach to use with a 3 cylinder outboard. I was told to order the 2C and enter 2RXL in the comments field along with the length of the cable that I wanted. While speaking with the guy at Tiny Tach, I found out that these model tachs were tested with/by Mercury. I have it mounted close to the factory tach and my factory tach reads about 300 RPMS higher at WOT and about 100 RPM higher at idle. For the record I'm using it on a 1995 Force 90hp. I'm very happy with the Tiny Tach.
