Tinytach question

I have looked at the tinytach.com website and it seems to me the tach should work with any 2 stroke regardless of how many cylinders it has. Am I correct in thinking this?

Re: Tinytach question

It is kind of hard to decipher their web site info.
I would call them and ask them which model would be best and if it would work on the various engines you have.

Re: Tinytach question

Definately call, the tiny tach I got from cabellas & was supposed to work on all motors registers twice my rpm. Either that or my motor likes to run at 10k rpm. :) It wasn't worth the effort to sent it back by the time I found out.

Re: Tinytach question

Like both replies above, call them. I did that for mine & they set me up with the right tach. Just ask for someone in tech support & tell them what outboard you have & they will suggest the correct one. BTW, they are great little tachs.

Interesting I noticed at the TT website - there's several options and explanations which to use - and is indeed confusing and probably incomplete which is what OP was talkign about.

Then you look at Cabelas and they only offer one item, implying like you've said, it should work on any engine.

So, which Tiny Tach works on a two cylinder, 2 stroke outboard engine? I really can't tell, from the TT website, but maybe I'm just dull.

Like I said, Call TinyTach & they set you up with the right one.

Re: Tinytach question

But why should a call be needed? Why can't they just say simply which one works with a 2 cylinder 2 stroke? Certainly it's a major application for their product? I'll call if I ever decide to buy one, but I'm not impressed with that web site, especially since the Cabelas offers only one and implies it works with all applications. Just venting. Thanks for the info.

Re: Tinytach question

I was looking into getting a tinytach, until I emailed them and got no response. Same question 2 cylinder 2 stroke what will work?

Re: Tinytach question

With a Tiny Tach, the number of cylinders does not make a difference.

Only the number of spark pulses on a plug wire per engine revolution is required to know which style tach.

Looks like the phone is the best way to contact them. ;)

Re: Tinytach question

Seahorse, that's the verification I was looking for. Since it reads the rpm's by picking up an inductive signal from one plug, and every plug on a 2 stroke fires on each revolution, it makes sense. Looks like it has a built in non-replacable battery that lasts for 5 years, wonder if the unit lasts that long on a salt water boat?

Mine has been bouncing around in a toolbox for 3 years and still working fine.

I understand that from their web site. But again how about for us fairly ignorant consumers. Really, without looking it up, I don't know how this applies to a 2 cycle, 2 cylinder engine. Don't all engines of this type have the same pulses per revolution? Is this not a very common engine type for their product? Why wouldn't they just list it - it seems more common than many of the engine types they list. Again, I'm not challenging you or any other poster, just complaining about their web site and information. It wouldn't be that hard to save us a phone call, and I think it would be better and more efficient marketing for their product.

Re: Tinytach question

According to the website many motors spark more often than is needed the motor to run. It is probably done for simplicity of the ignition system.
I should have let Cabellas know so they could fix the description in the catalog.
It still does the job I need it to do though.
