Every time I reinstall my outdrive (pre-alpha 1976) it never seems to go in on the first try. Gotta pull back and work it back in again. Doing this by myself is no easy task and I always seem to end up tearing the darn gasket just as I get everything all lined up and put together. I could use a good tip to help keep me from tearing this gasket. Thanks !

yes, its just that handling the outdrive to get it back into the bell housing is a job in itself. Once I get the right position it slides right in. It just never goes well for me right off the bat.

Re: Tip needed

Get a second set of hands from a neighbor or friend. That can help a lot, as well as making sure you have grease on the two o-rings located on the driveshaft to let them slide through the gimbal bearing.

Re: Tip needed

I have on hand a 2X4 and a 4x4 piece of wood. This is placed under the drive to raise it to the proper level. This helps me alot! I have seen pics on this forum of custom built stands that will hold the drive in a perfect position for install and removal.

Re: Tip needed

I finally decided to get the little tool designed to hold the shift slide in place. I did without it for years - it definitely helps if you are trying to install the outdrive by yourself with no helper. It only costs a buck or two. Here's what it looks like: (the orange tool)

Re: Tip needed

Both last two tricks sound good to me. Here is a link from Don and others input on different ways to make a stand, in case you haven't seen it yet. I made my base out of a moving dolly, the casters make moving around very easy.

Make the top of the stand the correct height to install the drive on the boat and it's like another person helping.
