Tip of the week...

I think I figured out why they say to disconnect the battery if the boat is to be stored for a long period of time...

I recently purchased a basstracker with 1981 model Mercury 50hp that had been sitting for approximately 6 years, with the old battery still connected. I noticed the wires coming out of the rectifier were badley corroded. I removed the contacts from the rectifier and the wires basically came apart in my hand. The "green monster" has crept from the rectifier all the way up under the flywheel to where they connect to the stator.

I am in the process of finding a puller to remove the flywheel to see what else is destroyed.

Do the wires go directly to the stator or is it possible to replace the wires without replacing the entire stator assembly? I would like to have the parts on hand when the flywheel is removed.

Also, is there someone that is familiar with a flywheel puller for this model motor? Is this something that can be "fabbed" or do I have to shell out the money for the real thing?

Thanks all...

Deek, you could call your nearest boat shop and ask them if they will pull the flywheel for you.

Re: Tip of the week...

Having the battery connected had nothing to do with this problem. Its just the crappy wire that Mercury used in those years. Stuff would just fall apart in your hands. How I pull the flywheel is two pull three of the six bolts around the center of the flywheel. Attach a puller at those bolt holes with longer bolts of course and remove the flywheel like any other brand. If you can trim back the wires till you get some good meat, you can solder and heat shrink new wires on the old ones. If not, you'll need to replace all the bad stuff.

Thanks for the replies! I had thought about removing a few of the six bolts surrounding the flywheel bolt but was hesitant because they were painted over (red) and obviously not meant to be removed.

I will look around to see if I can't beg, borrow or ....rent a regulation screw in type puller. If not, I may try to remove 3 of the existing as has been suggested.

Thanks again, this forum has been most helpful!

I saved my stator by using liquid tape on a 79 1/2 115hp. Lasted two seasons now.
