Tip to reconnect shift linkage 90hp 2000 Johnson

OK, so I use the shop manual to pull the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller. Everything went well. Putting it back together, I've run into a problem: I can't get the shift linkage re-connected. The manual simply says to re-connect. Any helpful hints, or is is pretty much trial and error?- Hard to do as a one man job...Thanks in advance

Well it might be a little late, but before you remove the lower unit, you can tie a piece of wire to the shifting rod, and then pull it back through when you install it.

Reach in with some long-nose pliers and pull the rod up... into fwd gear. Sometimes in the process of lifting the housing the shiftrod gets pushed down into rev. You should then be able to align the holes to install the screw/pin.

Also a bit easier to line up if you have the hitch pin and linkage pin removed from the shift arm.This allows radial and axial movement of the shift arm to assist in alignment of the split type coupler.On my 96'70 hp ,I find the reassembly job a snap once the starter is removed. :) It is tight in there.

Doesn't that motor have a split cowling pan. Take it apart and you can see wahts going on in there.

Walker - thanks for the tip. Removing the split cowling plan was the trick to seeing "whats going on in there". Connecting the shift linkage was relatively easy when you can see what you are doing. The motor pees like a race horse again in all gears - forward, neutral and reverse. Thank you for the advice....
