I was attempting to change the water pump on my 1978 9.9 evinrude, and when i was trying to get the lower unit to drop the driveshaft came free from the pinion gear and not at the top where i was hoping. Any Advice on how to free the driveshaft from the crankshaft? Thanks

Try soaking the union with penetrating oil like pb blaster - you will probably have to turn the motor upside down and let the lubricant run down the driveshaft.

After 24 hours take the spark plugs out and turn the flywheel colockwise while moving the driveshaft front to back and side to side to see if you can break the bond, which is probably rust. It helps to have an extra set of hands.

You may need to get purchase on the shaft with locking pliers, but try to stay above the area where the waterpump seals are normally located.
