tips on buying used outboard???

looking at buying a used boat & wondering if you guys could help me out.I dont know much about outboards<br />and need to know the simplest ways to tell the condition of an outboard.most of the boats I have looked at <br />arent near a lake so the best I can do is run them on muffs.any help is greatly appreciated.

Check compression, check for spark on all cylinders, Check lower unit oil. Dont take their word for it, check for yourself. Ask them to put it in a tank and start it.

Metalmessiah,By far the easiest and most thorough way to check the condition of a used outboard if you are not familiar with the several check points involved, is to secure the services of an experienced outboard tech and let him check it out first hand.It will be money and time well spent and you'll be leaps ahead of the game.
