Hey guys once again I'm looking for some help I am going to be changing the waterpump on my 1996 mercury 90 elpto Og302523 and I would like to know a few things or pointers iv watched a few videos on YouTube to get an idea of what I'll be looking I was wondering what gear it should be in when I drop the lowerunit and if all the new parts just stack back in like I pull them out also I seen someone put rvt on the exhaust side before putting it back on should I do that? Any help will be great thanks again guys!!!!

The best tip you'll ever get is to buy a GENUINE Mercury manual.

If you search the mercury forums, there is a lot of information on this topic. Drop the L/U in neutral. As Fed said, a manual will be a good investment and will have a step by step guide. You don't need gasket sealer for this job.

A tip I learned from a local merc dealer, put dish soap in the impeller area when installing.

That way it will have a little lube when firing up for the first time.

I toasted a brand new impeller on a Merc 9.8hp waiting for the water to start pumping, it never pumped...

took everything apart again, and found a melted impeller...

That little outboard was the first issue I have ever had with an impeller (I have done 8 outboards so far), but I will use that trick on every impeller change I do from now on.

Agreed on the dish soap, provides lube while protecting integrity of impeller. Petroleum products can swell impeller rubber, plus you can show the wife how clean your motor is with the bubbles. (They still don't get it)

Tido, A couple of tips. Most Mercs have a hidden bolt under the zinc anode. Remove the anode first to see if you have one. Drop the gearcase in neutral. Remove the prop to make the gearcase lighter. Clean any dirt or corrosion off the driveshaft before trying to install new impeller. I use emery paper for rust. Make sure there are gaskets above and below the wearplate. Make sure the stainless key fits properly and lock the impeller in place. Lube the impeller and upper water pump stainless insert, place the upper water pump over the impeller and turn the drivesahft CW to seat the impeller. Lube the driveshaft and shiftshaft splines with good marine grease. I lightly grease the entire driveshaft to keep the corrosion down. With the motor tilted all the way up, insert the driveshaft into the midsection. Turn flywheel to mesh drivshaft splines. Use needle nose plier to mate shift shafts. Finger tight the nuts and wiggle the gearcase to install it. No tools until it is all the way mated.

Tido. Buy an OEM MERC manual for that motor. Serial number is a must.
May cost 100 bucks but worth every penny. .02

Ok thanks I will see if they have the oem one I hope so it seems like it would be way better to have just my motor in it without all kinds of other stuff to have to thumb thru

Right on.
you can read that in living room,on your recliner, and get alot of info.
You will spend, less time on the internet and more time on your motor.
BUT if you have questions, be fill to ask..Again my .02
