I am going to install new impeller in the morning, on my 1984 8HP Evinrude long-shaft. And i was wondering....this is my first install of one of these. Seems simply enough on this motor but do any of you have any tips for installing the new stiff impeller the right way into the cup? Maybe a hose clamp or something to bend the impeller blades and let you slide it into the cup? Or just twist it in?

Turn the driveshaft by hand(clockwise) as you're lowering the housing down onto the impeller. Swipe a little vaseline or marine grease inside the housing to help it slip on.

Make sure that the impeller notch is line up with the key. If you don't the impeller won't spin and push water.

Yup, a small amount of grease on the blades and sort of rotate it in as you push down, note the direction the engine turns and get it in the right way.

I do mine a little different. I put the impeller in the housing before I install it on the drive shaft. Hold the housing upside down in your hand and twist the impeller CCW into the housing. That is to the left. Then simply just slide the housing down the driveshaft and onto the key.

Thanks guys! This is what had s me a bit confused as I have two different directions on installation. The directions with the kit mentioned rotating the blade, the LU manual mentioned installing into cup and then installing. I was kind of leaning towards the later, but the impeller is a bit stiff and was simply looking for tips to get it in without damage, Just tinkering with it here at my desk it looks like getting into the housing is easier said than done. Will try a couple of things and get back.

Well, the pump assembly is back together..had some minor issues along the way. The old impeller would NOT come off easily so I had to pull the drive shaft and pound it off (carefully)..then cleaned the shaft and all areas around the the hole, then slide it back in. The impeller went on OK (I used a 12" black nylon tie to get it into position then slid it in, was fine until I realized I reversed it :(.... so I ended up doing both install methods. Both seem to work fine. Cut the repairs short as wife wanted to run to a local place to fish, since it was almost 80 degrees here...So will finish LU install Monday evening and continue to get boat prepped for first outing. While the weather is unusually warm the lakes here are still muddy and high but look like first trip out will be EARLY this year for us...
