Tire age

I was a bit surprised today when I went to get my boat trailer tires replaced. The trailer is a 2006 and the tires on the 4 wheels were made in 1999!!! They were cracking really bad on the sides so I thought it was time to replace them anyway. Just a heads up, just because the trailer is new does not mean that the tires are the same age.

Both Maxxis and Goodyear limit their ST tire warranties to 6 years from date of manufacture or 4 years from installation, whichever come first.
That should tell you little something about a tire?s life expectancy from the manufacturer?s perspective.

There was a short article in Heartland Boating this month. An executive from Maxxis said trailer tires should be replaced at 5 years.

4 yrs. or first sign of dry rot...car , truck or trailer

I bought my boat last year and had a Carlisle bias ply and a Maxxis radial mounted on the wheels and another Carlisle for a spare. Swapped out the Maxxis and put spare Carlisle on the trailer to match the tires up. Looked at the date and told my wife they were manufactured in 08...wrong after doing some research found they were made in 98. Now I have 2 new Maxxis 8008 that I picked up today with manufacture date of 0210. Hopefully I will have them mounted and on the trailer tomorrow.
