I run a 1990 100gt Johnson. It has some problems and iI am trying to find out if it worth a rebuild or not. I know that there is at least 1 piston on the right bank that will need to be replaced. It is also over heating on the right side , I think it is due to the water deflecter needs to be changed, the water pumpalso needs to be changed.this motor has got hot several times,is a rebuild a good idea. A shop near me told me I was looking at $1500- $1800. That was going through the powerhead the carbs , awater pump, and having the heads done. Please give some input.

My suggestion would be to look on iboats and other places and see what a comparable rebuilt motor is selling for. You know what kind of overall shape your motor is in and have at least an idea of what it will cost to fix it [it's always more, seems like]. This should help guide you some, at least. Just a guess, but if you have lost one piston, the others may be suspect too.

Hey Dargle281, checked nadaguides and your motor is worth around 1000-1100(running). If you could do the work yourself (other than the bore), you'er looking at around 300-400 per dead cylinder(cost of gasket set is included). Water pump impeller...40, carb/fuel pump rebuild...40, doing it yourself. So, the question is , do I want to spend more money than my 13 year old motor is worth to get it up and running? Let me consult my magic 8 ball...answer is "rather doubtful" :D Have to advise parting her out on ebay or selling as a whole for parts...my $.02 worth.

Now...not knowing if ya' own two or three oil fields or do ya' just cut grass for a living, I would say look at what ya' can do right now with what funds may be available. No doubt about it, a new motor is an investment not just a "thing" anymore. Maybe a rebuild or a new short block may be the way right now until ya' can do better. Just my opinion.

if you enjoyed the motor when it was running at its best, seems to me it would be worth it. only you know for sure. unless you buy new you could be left in the same position if not worse in the $$$ area.
