my trailer has those little tires on it little tires and little rims. it's a pain loading the boat cause I have to back so far down in the water. I have a 21 ft party barge. my question is how hard would it be to put bigger rims and tires on it?

Re: tires

Define little. My 21 footer came from the factory with fourteen inch rims. Anything bigger probably wouldn't fit under the fenders, but also I think they do that to prevent the rig from being too tall as per D.O.T. regs (not positive about that). In any case, it seems like bigger wheels/tires would make launching harder rather than easier because the higher the trailer the farther into the water it has to go. Maybe I'm missing something. Can you elaborate? Welcome aboard.

Re: tires

It all depends on room! First of all what kind of trailer and tire size do you have? 20.5x8x10??? How many lugs on your hubs? Is it single axel or tandem? But it is mostly about room. If you put a larger tire on will it rub the fenders?

Why are you putting your trailer in so far? I have had a pontoon boat and now a tritoon for more than 12 years and have never put the trailer in the water more than 2/3 of the way in the water to launch and never more than 1/2 way in to load. I learned a long time ago that when loading , with the trailer only 1/2 way in I could drive my boat on the trailer and the rear would not swing around an be off the trailer.

Re: tires

when we put the boat on the trailer I end up having to get in the water and scoot the toons over cause it comes off when we are pulling out. and the reason I asked about bigger tires is i saw a guy with bigger tires load a toon by himself drove right up on the trailer he said cause he had bigger tires. and its single axle

Re: tires

If your back end is moving around and coming off the trailer when you pull out, then your trailer is toooo far into the water. Try loading with the trailer only 1/2 way in the the water and drive your boat on. If you get the front half of your boat on the trailer straight, the rear will settle down straight as you easy out of the water.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Last year I changed out the entire underneath of my trailer. I put in new springs, axles, hubs and 13" tires. I had the little fat 20.5x8x10 tires on it . My reason was because the road ate tires on longer (150 miles+) road trips.

Re: tires

Try calling the trailer mfg and ask them. Then you will know if there might be a reason for the tire size that you have.

Re: tires

Not backing in so far would have the same result as putting on bigger tires. If it drifts sideways you are in too deep.

Re: tires

What sort of gides dose it have. I am thinking it dose not have any on it to keep the boat centered and why its floating off or side ways. And no carpet wont make any diffrance and once its winched up to the stops on the front of the trailer that should hold it in place also. But I suspect it dose not have gides under the deck to hold it. And I am also here in WV and would be glad to help you out. Going to bigger tires wont solve the problem that will only raise the trailer higher and perhaps make it harder.

Re: tires

OK, no carpet on the bunks, no problem. Just back the trailer into the water as far as you think is safe to get the bunks wet. Then pull ithe trailer out about 1/2 way and load your boat. Your toons will slide on those wet bunks.
