We're trying to sell our boat, but just discovered we don't have the actual title in our files/possession. We clearly own the boat. I purchased it from a gentleman a couple years ago, distinctly recall walking into his bank and paying off his loan and giving him the addl cash we agreed upon. The bank signed off on the title, but then I honestly can't recall what happened after that. But I do have two receipt documents from the state showing that we paid two different transfer fees; one appears to be for the trailer, and the other is clearly for the boat (shows registration #, title #, describes the boat specifics, etc.). AND...the state recently sent us updated registration stickers for the side of the boat - so they know we own it.
However, when I sent my wife to the DMV to try and get a new title they told her we'd have to go back to the original owner to get it if we didn't have it. What?!
She's not really into boat ownership issues, so she just assumed that's what I'd have to do.
Please tell me I'm correct in assuming I just need to speak with someone a little more attuned with DMV policies, and that I can simply get a new title issued to me? We're hoping to sell the boat this weekend so a quick response is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
